YADA YADA Safety Hints

August 29, 2013

Gloria’s YADA YADA 8/29/2013 Safety Hints
This info is being provided through the courtesy of Vienna News and Mary Swift and Judy K. We appreciate them sharing it with us. Please read the various scenarios and don’t become a victim of any scams. Be careful. Technology is exciting but it can hurt you also.
1. Some people left their car in the long-term parking at San Jose while away, and someone broke into the car. Using the information on the car’s registration in the glove compartment, they drove the car to the people’s home in Pebble Beach and robbed it. So I guess if we are going to leave the car in long-term parking, we should NOT leave the registration/insurance cards in it, nor your remote garage door opener.
This gives us something to think about with all our new electronic technology.
2. GPS.
Someone had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard. When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents.
Something to consider if you have a GPS – don’t put your home address in it… Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen.
I never thought of this…….
This lady has now changed her habit of how she lists her names on her cell phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag, which contained her cell phone, credit card, wallet, etc., was stolen. 20 minutes later when she called her hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened, hubby says ‘I received your text asking about our Pin number and I’ve replied a little while ago.’ When they rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The thief had actually used the stolen cell phone to text ‘hubby’ in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from their bank account.
Moral of the lesson:
a. Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list. Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, Sweetheart, Dad, Mom, etc….
b. And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked through texts, CONFIRM by calling back.
c. Also, when you’re being texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don’t reach them, be very careful about going places to meet ‘family and friends’ who text you.
4. Purse in the grocery cart scam…
A lady went grocery-shopping at a local mall and left her purse sitting in the children’s seat of the cart while she reached something off a shelf…wait till you read the WHOLE story! Her wallet was stolen, and she reported it to the store personnel. After returning home, she received a phone call from the Mall Security to say that they had her wallet and that although there was no money in it, it did still hold her personal papers. She immediately went to pick up her wallet, only to be told by Mall Security that they had not called her. By the time she returned home again, her house had been broken into and burglarized. The thieves knew that by calling and saying they were Mall Security, they could lure her out of her house long enough for them to burglarize it.
Even if this does not pertain to you….Pass it on to your family and friends.

1. Make sure heat tapes are working, plugged in, and cover your water meter. Insulate water lines with foam pipe insulation. (You can buy it at Handyman Hardware very cheap) Place fiberglass insulation around water meter and over crock.

2. On days or nights when the temperature outside or wind chill is 15 degrees or less, LET YOUR FAUCETS DRIP INSIDE YOUR HOME. ( running water doesn’t freeze.)

3. Check your skirting weekly . Tight skirting will prevent wind from getting under your home and freezing pipes your pipes.

4. Prepare your windows with plastic.

5. If you have Jealousy (roll out)windows, use small screws outside to keep them tight.

6. Oil all outside locks to keep them from freezing.

7. Check your doors for drafts, install weather stripping if needed.

8. Check snow shovels, make sure screws and rivets are tight.

9. Keep all sidewalks, steps, and porches free of snow, and salted.

10. Shovel on street next to sidewalk, so that the plow can see how far over to plow. If you see the plow in the park, PLEASE move your car, and tell your neighbors, so he can plow better, and not plow you in. If you don’t do this, don’t blame the plow driver, as he can’t plow over your car.

11. Park as close to the sidewalk as possible. DO NOT park out in the street, or with the back of your car sticking out in the street, Emergency vehicles have to get through.

12. Check with utility companies for possible budget, or heap plans available.

We of Peoples Voice are only here and organized, to help the residents of Vintage Village. We sincerely hope these tips will help you get through the winter with as few as possible.

“Write In” candidate for Liberty School Board
Some of you already know what this letter conveys so if there is nothing new, please delete it. For many others this will be new. As you no doubt know by now, we have 3 openings on the Liberty BOE and only one person is running. This is shameful and terrible for our community. We have a district that is in fiscal emergency, a township that the state auditor (right or wrong) says he does not know if we can make it and now a district that no one will even run for office. Who is going to want to move here and open businesses here. Our property values will plummet and when all those thousands of vouchers are made available by the Gov, we will see an even greater exodus. Not to mention, I believe we have no one on the board to speak up for transparency and the students and the taxpayers. I have called everyone I know and no one wants to run. I am running as a write in. I may get battered and lose since I resigned but at least I can look myself in the mirror and say I tried.
I want to set the record straight. As I float this idea of running for the BOE. The response seems to be unanimous. Everyone is in favor of it but all are concerned about my health and if I should I do it. Here is my official answer.
I feel up to it and I still have some fight left in me.
I would rather leave working for my community and what I believe in than extend my time whimpering in some rest home thinking about what I should have tried to do.
I believe in transparency and open meetings where those who attend can speak up with comments and suggestions according to reasonable rules and not require early requests. This is the only true venue for the public to participate in the management and direction of our schools. I am opposed to retire-rehire. It is a short sighted inadequate solution that leaves our young people with no jobs and no futures. In the long run it does not save money. Experience is valuable but so is youth, fresh, new ideas and greater participation by the staff and public in school activities. We have school personnel in administrative positions playing checkers and just moving around the state from one position to another. Our elected officials are doing the same. It is the same O, same O. If you think this is not true, check the records. I am opposed to stipends. Spread that work out and lay off one less person. I am opposed to 6 am meetings unless it is an emergency. These positions will not be popular with many who hold these positions but in all fairness, they and the public should know What I believe and WHY.
Now you know some of what I believe. If you do not agree with me on these items or you will hold my resignation against me then I am not your girl.
UPDATE: Went to BOElections today and I was unfamiliar with the rules for “write In” candidates. I do NOT need a petition. I have officially registered and paid my fee. All that is required now is for people to vote for me as a “write in” candidate. Just touch the write in screen and a key board will appear, type Gloria Lang or Lang and touch record write in. If anyone has any questions, ask the poling person. It is very simple. I am available and will be available to answer any questions that anyone would have about my knowledge of the district or my perspectives. Please pass the word about my candidacy. Every single person that I informed about the possibility of running returned comments immediately with acceptance and such strong, kind words of support. I can’t tell you how much this means to me. Thank you everyone. I will go forward. g

From the Chief of Police Please Read

August 6, 2013

I have just received this information from Chief Tisone, Liberty Police. He asked me to pass it on to my readers. Please read it and tell all those who do not have computers and will receive this. Many of our seniors do have them so please call your friends in our community and warn them of this. Anyone could fall for a scam like this. This one involved only property but it could have been worse. Be a good neighbor and share this. I thank the Chief for making us aware.
We had a Burglary in Austintown in which a tanned skinned male (possibly Hispanic), neatly dressed and groomed, arrived at the residence of an elderly couple advising that his landscaping company was going to be cleaning up the adjacent, undeveloped property around their property. The male requested that the couple follow him to the rear of their property to verify their property lines/pins. The male (suspect) was on his cell phone several times during the visit. This went on for approximately 15-20 minutes and ended with the male stating that he had to leave and take care of a large tree that had just fallen at another location. Said male then rushed to his vehicle in the driveway and sped off. The next day the couple notice that some jewelry was missing from a bedroom dresser and a large amount of cash was missing from an office in the basement. No signs of forced entry were observed anywhere at the residence, and nothing was left out of place.
The description of the male is: possible Hispanic male, 25-30 years of age, 5′ 10″, 140 lbs., neatly dressed and groomed, said his name was “Joe”.
Vehicle description is: newer pick-up truck (full-size, unknown make/model), gray or light tan in color, extended cab, Ohio plates (unknown numbers).
If anyone has had, or has, anything similar to this happen in their jurisdictions please forward any information to me. Call 330-759-1315 Liberty Police Thank you in advance.

Stay safe, keep your neighbors safe –thanks Chief
